At Fray Bentos at the Rio Uruguay, essential processes of industrial food production were realised for the first time from 1863 on. The largest meat processing factory in Uruguay, El Anglo, employed up to 4000 workers. From 30 kg of beef, 1 kg of meat extract was obtained. Corned beef and other canned meats were also produced here.
Today, the former factory facilities are not only the Museo de la Revolución Industrial but also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The outside facilities are quite run-down. Two old loading cranes stand on a new jetty. In one of the historic halls, factory equipment is on display, including an oven for preserving corned beef. The generator hall next door is a real sight. Steam engines and diesel engines drove generators here. This factory was certainly one of the first electrified in the world.
