Very interesting water features on the north coast of Kauai. The hole in the lava repeatedly fills with water, spills over, and drains back to the ocean. Best visited at high tide.

Photography Tips

I'd suggest making a first visit in daylight to find this spot. They go back to sunrise or sunset to photograph in beautiful light. Take a head torch or flashlight with you as finding the location (or returning from it) in the dark can be tricky.

Travel Information

You'll need a jeep, or you can park next to a farm and walk along the trail out to Mokolea Point. The access road is easily found on maps. Once there, you'll need to hike to the west along the coastline to reach the lava pools. It's an easy 0.5-mile hike to the point, then a more moderate hike along the lava field to reach the cauldron.
