USA ALCAN Highway
In the USA the Alaska Highway is called ALCAN Highway (Alaska-Canadian Highway). A few kilometers north of the Border between Alaska (USA) and Yukon (Canada) effects of the permafrost soil are very vividly to be seen: telegraph masts on the roadside are sunk into the defrosted ground and tipped in all directions. But also the road has shifted. The permafrost soil thaws only one to one and a half meters deep in summer. Underneath, it is permanently frozen. If it thaws a little deeper than usual, the whole road and its base tend to glide in all directions.
