USA Lincoln Park Zoo, Chicago, Illinois
The zoo is free and serves as a wonderful break from its dense urban surroundings. For a free zoo, it's pretty impressive...plenty of fun animals to photograph.
Photography Tips
I'm not sure if tripods are officially allowed, but there aren't too many people patrolling the zoo (and they're usually preoccupied with screaming schoolchildren instead), so you can probably get away with using one as long as you're quick with it. As long as it's sunny, though, you'll probably be fine if you have image stabilization. Either way, make sure you bring your telephoto lens to get those close-up portraits of goofy-looking giraffes...
Travel Information
I've always walked or taken public transit to get here, so I'm not sure what the parking situation is. There are plenty of parking spots, but I'm sure it costs a fortune. On the bright side, the zoo itself is free!
