Romania Ieud Hill Church
The crowning glory of craftsmanship in the use of wood as well as architecture in Romania are the famous wooden churches in Maramureş. Some are actually made entirely of wood, without a single nail! And a few are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Particularly beautiful examples stand in the valley of the river Iza (Valea Izei), between Moisei and Sighetu Maramaţiei.
The oldest of these wooden churches, dating from 1364, stands on a hill at Ieud surrounded by a particularly picturesque cemetery.
