Shiprock is the throat of an extant volcano. There are multiple radiating walls of lava that look like an ancient civilization made them. This was shot at first light.

Photography Tips

Stunning at tripod level but I preferred to shot this with a drone camera. Wonderful shooting early or late.

Travel Information

There is a sandy parking area, just off the road. There are also jeep roads which go way back to and beyond the volcano. High clearance vehicle preferable and dirt road turns to sticky mud just after a rain.
